5 Essbase Performance Tuning Tips You Should Know
Slow retrievals and long calc times are among the most common complaints from Essbase users. Before you start throwing hardware at the problem, try these five tuning approaches that consistently make a real difference.
1. Review Your Dense/Sparse Configuration
This is the single most impactful setting in a BSO cube. A well-configured dense/sparse setup reduces the number of data blocks and speeds up calculations dramatically.
Rule of thumb: dimensions where most combinations of members have data should be dense. Typically Time and Accounts. Everything else is usually sparse.
2. Avoid Unnecessary Dynamic Calculations
Dynamic calc members are recalculated on every retrieval. Overusing them — especially on high-cardinality dimensions — adds up fast.

- Move members that are frequently retrieved to stored calculations
- Run a calc script to pre-calculate and store values where it makes sense
3. Optimize Your Calc Scripts
Poorly written calc scripts are a hidden bottleneck. Common fixes:

4. Tune Your Aggregate Storage (ASO) Cubes
For ASO cubes, aggregation design matters enormously. Run the aggregation advisor in EAS or the cube designer to identify the optimal set of views to materialize.
5. Monitor Cache Settings
Essbase uses several caches — index cache, data file cache, data cache. Check your current settings against the size of your index and data files. Undersized caches mean constant disk I/O.
Performance tuning is iterative. Make one change at a time and measure the impact before moving to the next.
